Chiropractor in Beverly Hills : Dr. Zail Khalsa

As a Doctor of Chiropractic I understand that life and healing come from within, and that the promotion and maintenance of health is vastly superior to the treatment of disease. My journey to this awareness was long and arduous. I endeavor to help others learn from my experience.

Beverly Hills Chiropractor, Dr. Zail Khalsa

In 1895 Dr. DD Palmer, the discoverer of Chiropractic, determined that the cause of dis-ease which led to disease was "trauma, toxins and autosuggestion". Sixty years later in his famous classic, “The Stress of Life,” Nobel Prize nominee, Dr. Hans Selye, confirmed Palmer's idea that stress or "dis-ease" is the underlying cause of all disease. Physical, chemical or emotional stress that exceeds your capacity to adapt ultimately lead to exhaustion and disease. Therefore the key to health is to strengthen your inner capacity to adapt to stressors. Living a chiropractic wellness lifestyle has helped me and my Beverly Hills chiropractic patients regain and maintain vitality and vigor.

My Chiropractic Story…

It all started shortly after I was born. I was given a shot of penicillin to treat a minor infection to which my body reacted violently. I was hospitalized for a number of weeks when all my joints became swollen and painful with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis-like symptoms. My parents told me that I was so swollen that I could not even be held or touched because of the painful inflammation. I was treated with heavy doses of corticosteroids which damaged my endocrine and immune systems.

At age six, my tonsils were surgically removed as a treatment for a sore throat. Tonsillectomies have since been determined to be harmful as they remove important lymph tissue which protects the body, especially from cancer.

Shortly thereafter, while my family was driving along an icy road near Niagara Falls, our car was rear ended and I suffered a concussion and whiplash. This injured the vital nerve supply to the lymph nodes in my neck.

Behind my elementary school ran a little stream. I was an amateur scientist collecting water samples to look at algae under my microscope. Upstream, General Electric was polluting the creek with waste transformer oil contaminated with cancer causing PCBs (Agent Orange).

At age 12, I discovered a lump in my neck glands. Hodgkin’s Lymphoma was diagnosed. My parents were told that I had a 5% chance of survival. The radiation treatment in 1970 was crude and left me in chronic pain and ill health. I was sent home to die. Fortunately no one told me that I was supposed to die. I never identified with being sick. I wanted to be healthy and play baseball. I eventually recovered!

Scientist, scholar and teacher combining extensive background in both the art and science of vitalistic healthcare and the biomedical sciences of recombinant DNA, molecular genetics and the molecular biology of gene expression.

I went on to college with the goal of helping children with cancer. I was awarded a full academic scholarship by the Quaker Oats Foundation to attend the University of Rochester where I received Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Biology. As a research scientist under Dr. Frank Young, Director of the Food and Drug Administration under President Regan, our lab group cloned protein factor 8, the hemophilia gene for Bayer Pharmaceutical. The University awarded me the prestigious National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship for my PhD studies in molecular genetics.

At that time I was suffering from shooting pains in my neck and skull, a condition that began in high school. During the treatment of cancer, a biopsy of the lymph nodes in my neck injured my long thoracic nerve. As a result of this nerve injury, it felt as if an ice pick was being driven into my skull every time I lifted my left arm over my head. The pain would literally knock me to the ground. Eventually my hands started going numb. Seeking to help myself, I began practicing Kundalini yoga. Thankfully, my first yoga teacher, the late Mahatma Singh of Rochester, NY taught me the basic principles of a healthy lifestyle and referred me to his chiropractor, Dr. Mahlon Blake for help.

When Dr. Blake first adjusted me it felt as if he had pulled out a knife that had been stabbing me for years. The relief was tremendous. I would ride my bike every week an hour in both directions just to get adjusted. Over time, I regained my health and the vitality that was lost as a result of the cancer treatments. At that time I experienced a spiritual calling to leave medicine behind and become a Doctor of Chiropractic. Dr. BJ Palmer, the developer of chiropractic once said, “Medicine is the study of disease and what causes a man to die. Chiropractic is the study of health and what causes a man to live.

Chiropractic Education

I completed my doctoral studies at Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, Oregon, where I graduated with Honors in 1985. I moved to Del Mar, California to surf and start a private practice. I was the Team Chiropractor for the San Diego Padres from 1995-1997. My patients included Baseball Hall of Fame greats Ricky Henderson and Tony Gwynn. I moved my practice to Beverly Hills in 1998.

I practice and teach other chiropractors scientific specific chiropractic adjustments as originally taught from 1895 to 1913 by Dr. DD Palmer, the developer of chiropractic.

This vitalistic approach to chiropractic has virtually disappeared as recent chiropractic graduates have lost the art, science, philosophy and mastery of the chiropractic adjustment. I also co-teach a course in Chiropractic Pediatrics for profoundly neurologically injured children with Dr. Bobby Doscher of Oklahaven Children's Chiropractic Center, who is at the forefront of applying vitalistic chiropractic care for reviving and restoring health in children with profound health challenges. This course is held yearly at my office and at the Southern California Health Sciences University and is attended by doctors and students from across the country.

On a personal note…

Chiropractor in Beverly Hills, Dr. Zail Khalsa and dog

I live a Chiropractic wellness lifestyle. I have received regular chiropractic adjustments for the last 35 years. I eat pure and wholesome organic vegetarian food. I meditate daily. I avoid medications and I wouldn’t even vaccinate my dog much less recommend it for your children. Since I’ve switched to a Chiropractic wellness lifestyle, I have not missed a day of work due to illness in over 3 decades.

I have spent the last few years learning and practicing new (to me) forms of exercise: Olympic Weight lifting (the snatch and the clean and jerk) and Russian Kettlebells. I work out 4-6 days a week on the beach in Topanga or Malibu during the spring and summer and at the John Wooden Center on the UCLA campus during the fall and winter where I work out with the Olympic lifting club.

I’ve been getting back into the water, body surfing and learning to stand up paddle surf. I'm looking forward to return surf trips to Hawaii, Mexico and Costa Rica. And I'm back running again. Rather than marathons, I’m running wind sprints and High Intensity Intervals on the track at UCLA and racing my Italian Greyhound on the beach.

I enjoy spending my summer weekends fly-fishing, hiking, camping and hot spring soaking in the Eastern Sierras. I hike into Rock Creek Lake at 10,000 ft elevation above Tom’s Place near Mammoth to fly fish. In addition I have 35 years experience teaching and practicing yoga, meditation, ayurveda, exercise and nutrition. I have an extensive background in fitness and exercise which includes big wave surfing, marathon running, Olympic weight lifting, flying trapeze circus performer.

Enough about me! I look forward to meeting you in person. Give our Beverly Hills chiropractic office a call or email me using the link below. We look forward to changing your life for the better.
